Lots of big grins these days. Sometimes the writing life hugs you back!
At last week's Book Expo America, Six Kinds of Sky was named the editor's choice as best book of fiction for 2002 by Foreward Magazine. It bested several dozen finalists for the honor, designed for books presented by independent publishers. We haven't seen the sculpture trophy, but are eager to get our hands on it and we'll definitely share a peek! Kudos also, of course, to the publishers at Cinco Puntos Press. This was a book promised to Bobby Byrd several years ago and he had the patience to wait. Guess it paid off all the way around!

Almost as big is the sense of excitement and relief after Luis finished the manuscript for The Devil's Highway, due out from Little, Brown in Feb. 2004.
